BloG #20: Open Road - Part Deux II

In continuing this story from BloG #19 concerning the 1979 Open Road tour, we will start where we left off.

Having not witnessed the terrible accident on the hill above a small town named Gays Mills, Wisconsin with my own eyes, I cannot comment firsthand about what took place. However, that evening, I saw a young girl in extreme pain get picked up & taken home from the trip by her parents and it made us all very sad. I wrote to her several weeks later & learned she slowly recovered from her awful wounds. Needless to say, we all had a new respect for the unknown road which lie ahead.

The over-riding theme to this trip seemed to be the rain. Looking back in my 25 year old memories, I keep visualizing wet pavement and rain ponchos everywhere.

We eventually crossed the Mississippi River and marvelled at the locks and barges on the river. Our next stay was in Lansing, Iowa. My most prominent memory of this town unfortunately revolves around the numerous attacking mosquitoes! There was no relief!!

Riding northward the next day, I gained my first exposure to a new song on the radio - 'My Sharona' by The Knack. A fellow rider kept singing the bass line over & over & over (DanananaNa Na Na Na Na Na naNanananana MY SharoNA!) when we were riding through Brownsville, Minnesota. I finally asked "what IS that you're singing?" His reply, "You've GOT to be kidding! You haven't heard My Sharona? Where've you been???" Of course, 10 minutes later, I could hear it blaring from the nearest radio!

We then crossed back over the Mississippi & got literally drenched coming into LaCrosse, Wisconsin. Fortunately, our itinerary included a stop at a Perkins where we could wring ourselves out.

The next highlight came with our trek down the Elroy-Sparta State Bike Trail. This was an experience like none other! The 32 mile trail on an old railroad bed took us through 3 tunnels, including one that is 3/4 of a mile long! Flashlights came in handy & walking was an highly desireable option here!

The Wisconsin Dells loomed large for everyone. We all hosed each other down in a serious water fight and then loaded up our bodies into the back of the U-Haul trailer for a ride out to The Tommy Bartlett Water Show for an evening of water-skiing and magical entertainment.

Riding on The Merrimac Ferry across the Wisconsin River between Sauk and Columbia counties was a special treat. This was, and I believe, still is Wisconsin's only FREE ferry service.

A revelation came to this 17 year old rider during one of the long days sitting on a bike saddle. My riding group included one African-American rider named Anthony. Anthony, who had a slight tendency to be humorous at times, started complaining about a sunburn. Well, this young white boy from Iowa moved forward with his base instinct and began to laugh. Having only met 3 African-Americans (Anthony being #3) up to this point, I had no idea whether this could be a reality. Guess what!.....

Finally, the end of the trip was near & one of my greatest physical achievements came into being.

Boy, was I in for a royal treat! The brilliance shone through from beginning to end. I could not step away through the whole session. I was afraid I might miss something! Rarely, do I feel the immediate satisfaction from having every emotion captured by an artist. Lana's music left no stone unturned. In conclusion, my personal note to Lana is: Consider me your newest fan!

We recommend giving the whole of Lana's page a listen. But, you might start with Trial By Fire featuring the brilliant guitars of Scott Landers and Lana's collab featuring guitar by Mark Skipper of Damien Project, My Epitaph (2004).

BloG #19: Open Road - Part Deux

The summer of '79 led me to my 2nd Open Road trip. After an incredible first trip with this group from the south suberbs of Chicago, I decided to saddle up with them up again. This time, I came with a new (to me) bike in tow. Signing up at the last minute the previous year didn't afford me a lot of time to prepare with my cycling equipment. Physically, I was in good shape, having come off a backpacking trip in Colorado the previous week. But the bicycle on my first trip left a bit to be desired.

My new (to me) bicycle this year was a 1976 Motobecane Grand Record with the classic red & black frame and Campy dropouts. This bike was fitted with many of the finest components of the time and had a feel which seemed to beg the rider to get it moving! It had been ridden on the Bikecentennial and it was ready for plenty more.

In addition to the new bicycle, I had subscribed to and inherited a couple years worth of Bicycling mags. I read each issue cover to cover. My bicycle had become not only my primary mode of transportation, but also in many ways, my confidant. I could trust it to take me wherever I needed to go, even if it just meant giving my mind some time to roam.

All of this lead to a heightened anticipation for the 1979 Open Road tour on my part. Upon arrival at the starting point in Round Lake, IL, a lot of time was spent catching up with old friends and acquaintances from the previous year and just enjoying each others' company once again.

The sticking point in my memory bank of this event was of a returning veteran rider named 'Joe.' Joe had gained noteriety on previous trips for his 'Piano Stories.' Each night the riders would be treated to an impromptu performance by Joe, who had no musical skills whatsoever, banging out the highlights of the day's ride on a piano. Each pause in his accompaniment would allow just a little more of his story to be told. Combined with Joe's au natural hair stylings and goofy smile, the story always entertained and never disappointed!

The first night, several of us hopped into the car with Joe for some reason. Joe took us on a rather memorable ride through downtown Round Lake that was unlike any car ride I have ever experienced before or since. The Star Wars headlight show, the singing and a few other unmentionables made for an amusing, sometimes scary, joyride.

This Open Road ride was going to lead us from northeastern Illinois into southcentral Wisconsin, where we stayed one night in Beloit, WI. From there, we headed north and westward through New Glarus, Mineral Point, Hollandale, Dodgeville... The Sugar River Bike Trail was a highlight of this portion of the ride. We even toured House On The Rock at Spring Green, WI. Next, came a winding ride through wonderful orchards.

Suddenly, fellow bikers appeared along the road warning us to approach the upcoming downhill ride with EXTREME caution. "Use your brakes and ride SLOWLY," they yelled. Half way down the very long hill, we instantly became aware of the dangers we were being cautioned about. What appeared to be a gentle turn on a steep hill, abruptly became a violent turn to the right behind a hidden mountainside corner. To the left, was a very steep dropoff. To add to the equation, bring on the wet roads from drizzly weather. Legend has it many truckers have met their Maker on this stretch.

The crux of the story lies in Alisha, a girl who was on her first Open Road trip. Unfortunately, Alisha was in one of the first groups to approach this hill. Needless to say, habit kicked in and everyone braced for an expeditious ride down the hill. The fun came to a hasty conclusion upon Alisha's horrifying misfortune with the pavement on the hill.

Closer examination by JavaMusiK has revealed that the NY based ensemble Project Mercury escorts the listener through an occasional brush with social consciousness to a seemingly more innocent time and place through their music. The moniker, Project Mercury, appears to be an ideal fit with it's optimistic reference to the imminent NASA mission of it's time. The music and subject matter create a seamless blend captivating the targeted audience with it's down-to-earth, yet occasional dreamy feel.

We recommend giving Faded Leather and Light This Candle a listen.

BloG #18: Open Road - Part 1

This BloG is going to relate to the first in a series of one of my favorite memories of my high school and college years. As a result of my uncle's leadership involvement with a bicycling group in northern Illinois, I subsequently hooked up with them as well for 4 summers. Everyone on this ride was from the southern suberbs of Chicago - except me. I was the lone Iowan. That made for some pretty funny ribbing. LOL

During the summers of 1978 - 1980 and 1982, I toured with a group of (primarily) Presbyterian and Methodist youth from around the southern suberbs of Chicago. At about that time, those tours became known as 'Open Road.' Average size of the tour was around 80 cyclists. We broke that number down to around 9 or 10 groups of 8 or 9 people each, spaced out several miles apart.

1978, my first big ride started in Wilmette, IL. (Our photo was taken by the Chicago Sun Times that first morning and the pic appeared on the front page!) After the first day, we crossed Lake Michigan on a ferry called 'The Badger.' The ferry ride started at 9 pm in Milwaukee, WI and arrived in Ludington, MI at around 3:30 am. We rode the eastern Michigan coastline north to Manistee, where the waves were chilly but fantastic! I seem to remember a number of our bikers cleaning sand out of their chains and gears after some time at the beach later that evening. hehe... We continued north the next day past a beautiful field of sunflowers and onward through Traverse City (I still remember a group of us getting kicked out of someone's backyard access to the lake in T.C.), Charlevoix, Petoskey, Harbor Springs and finally Mackinaw City. That night, we sat out on the beach and looked at the lit up Mackinaw Toll Bridge in all it's glory. It was beautiful.

At the crack of dawn, we crossed the 5 mile long bridge (world's longest suspension bridge, at the time) with a police escort. The sight of the sun rising over the island dotted horizon to the east was astounding. Once across to the other side, we then boarded a ferry to Mackinac Island. Eating at the Grand Hotel, I remember having my first chocolate mousse ever. Of course the fudge shops, a zither player on a shop's front porch and no cars anywhere on the island all left their impression on me enough to remember 26 years later.

We then made the return trip back to Illinois via the route we had just travelled. This time, the ferry trip across Lake Michigan was by day. I was struck by the fact you could see no land, once out in the middle of the lake.

Average riding distance for a day was typically 65 - 85 miles. We did have a day or two for an optional 'century ride' - a one hundred mile ride. The trip took 10 days and we covered roughly 800 miles.

My memories of meeting 80 new friends instantaneously, nightly back rubs, sleeping coed nightly in churches, riding through beautiful unfamiliar country, climbing steep hills & racing down the other side, cold dewey early mornings - followed by steamy hot afternoons and the saddle discomfort all remain quite vivid. I can still remember stopping in a northern Chicago suberb where there was a small driving range & one of our riders had to hit a bucket of balls. Not far from that, a sports car had passed us & the driver was watching us so much that his car hit the concrete median rather solidly & bounced about like a pinball!

The one memory which hit probably the hardest at the time was waking up the next morning after the trip was over, and just feeling so alone.... Most of those people I had just spent so much time & energy with, I would never see again - ever....

With the recent release of You're In My Trance, KMP (a.k.a. Harout Kalandjian) has proven his extraordinary talent and diversity to the industry. His transitions from Electronica to Ambient to World Fusion are resourceful and precocious and display an undisputed amount of forbearance and aptitude.

With online music distribution companies running rampant, KMP's affluent notoriety has him scaling a plethora of chart positions attaining irrefutable reviews from songwriters and fans alike. In such a competitive industry, KMP's stake at fame is void of ambiguity.

KMP can only be described as a melting pot of musical Genres. Harout Kalandjian is well known for mixing it up. He is not afraid to combine styles and present it the way he hears it in his mind...

JavaMusiK has observed that LA based artist KMP approaches his art form in a variety of dimensions. While circumventing the impression of pidgeonholing his musical image into just one genre, several listens will reveal a signature sound clearly identifiable as belonging to the distinctive approach of the enigmatic KMP.

First, there is the music. While Electronica and Ambient seem to be at the forefront of his stylings, we also notice traces of straight ahead Rock & Roll, Jazz, New Age & World Fusion woven throughout his vast repertoire. The inclusion of KMP's many different collaborations has indeed contributed to his expanded musical fashion.

KMP has also recently begun employing an increased implementation of visual awareness into his image. While the package doesn't submerge or completely embrace this perception, you can often feel evidence of a translucent obscurity moving stealthily throughout his aura. Upon second glance, however, you will receive a very uplifting motif throughout his message. This is where the ambiguity settles in as a portion of the image. We have yet to fully discern the meaning of the name KMP, however there seems to be some interesting speculation going around.

Harout's new album will be titled PASSION... Current collaborations includes several Ambient tracks featuring The One And Only LISA / Hip Hop to feature JUSTAMAN and NICKI NOVA / New Age to feature A Haunting Siren For The Modern Age QUEENIE / Pop tracks featuring New Jersey rocker JASON DIDNER / World Fusion featuring Master Instrumentalist ED DRURY / Take this trip from Electronica to Ambient and World Fusion to New Age. A Melting Pot Of Musical Genres, KMP Style.

BloG #17: Will It Work? Stay Tuned!

Here I sit, once again writing w/out any idea where this narrative is going to go. It just so happens that it is late, I should be in bed, yet I feel a need to create. The piano is too loud for this hour when 5 other souls are asleep in the household (each daughter has a friend over tonite) so the next option is to write. Unfortunately, I have no topic in mind. That can pose a problem, I suppose. So far though, I have already managed to eek out a few lines of generally nothing here. Let's see if the stream will eventually pick up any conscience along the way. Stream of Conscience or Stream of Conscious?

I keep hoping that one day I can begin to exist w/out having to punch in to a workplace. Financial independence - the holy grail of existence. I haven't figured out the route yet, but that is not to say I haven't taken baby steps to try to some day make it happen. My hope is that somehow a foundation is being laid which might eventually lead to something bigger, causing an avalanche of wealth. Will that come about from working for someone else? Not likely. Will it come about from conforming to standards of everyone else who is doing the same job as I? Doubtful. I don't have the answers. However, I feel it is imperative to continue a search for that avenue which may someday produce results beyond my wildest dreams, whether it be through a creation I developed, an investment I made, an idea I had or maybe some other completely unknown route to this holy grail.

The one thing I've been learning is that we all can increase our chances of success with a good model. Modeling - watch someone who has already achieved success in their goals. Choose your model carefully! Learn from them. How do we do that, especially if we don't personally know anyone with the type of success we are looking for? Read. Read as much as you can & read some more. Tap in to what their secrets were. What did they do differently?

I do believe that in order to be prepared for financial wealth, one's soul must be in line with one's self. It doesn't seem possible to be able to experience independent wealth & survive without first being in tune with one's inner self. This may indeed sound like quackery to some, but I think from the reading I have done so far, I am not too far off on this one.

Let's explore this a bit. If a person hasn't taken care of their own inner needs along the way, what is going to happen to them once they achieve their financial goal? It has often been said that money cannot buy happiness. Others argue that while that statement may be true, money can sure substitute for a lot of inequities &/or misgivings. That may be so... But, how long does it last?

To truly experience financial wealth, one must be able to sustain a level of inner wealth as well. Otherwise, a void will always eat at the inner self, causing a dangerous imbalance which will fester and eventually cause destructive behavior in that person. This may be through relationships with those closest to that person or maybe even business relationships. Or maybe they will have self-destructive tendencies that they will not be able to work their way out of. Indeed, these issues need to be taken care of before the distractions that come with financial wealth settle in.

So, as I look at my own situation, I find that my past has been a training ground for what is yet to become. Mistakes are being made to lay the groundwork for a better tomorrow. The key to all my mistakes is to be sure to try to learn a life's lesson from it. Try not to repeat the same mistake and use the said mistake as an opportunity to evaluate the current course of travel.

I once read that our subconscious minds are nearly incapable of distinguishing between what is reality and what is fantasy or a goal. This may explain the importance of focusing on the positive and not dwelling on the negative. Dream the dreams and try to be specific. Imagine you have achieved your goal already and keep focusing on that as if it is reality. Supposedly, the sub-conscious mind will figure out how to get you there. Prayers & God, anyone?

I'm prepared to test this principle & see if it works. Stay tuned!

BloG #16: Storm King Sacrifice

This post is being made on the 10th anniversary of a terrible tragedy which I was a witness to.

On July 6, 1994, 14 firefighters were killed in a firestorm on the side of Storm King Mountain in the South Canyon Fire just west of Glenwood Springs, Colorado.

Storm King Sacrifice was written at the base of that mountain 4 years later.

Ed Drury is a multi instrumentalist, composer, teacher, instrument maker and author. Since 1989, he has pursued his first love, the study of various traditional music forms from around the world. Today he combines his experience with classical music and his love for traditional music forms by composing music inspired by his world travels.

Ed lives in Portland Oregon where he teaches, performs and records. Ed has performed with Francis Firebrace-Jones, a Yorti Yorti story teller, with Australian Folk Musician and songwriter Clancey Dunn, Jawighe, Michael Stirling, Jawihge, Randy Graves, Stephen Kent, Dave Crowder and Land of the Blind.

Ed Drury is a stirring performer who gives you the feeling you're tapping into an ancient realm as you listen to him work his way around the didjeridu, native flutes and other fascinating instruments.

While the didgiridu is usually seen (heard) as an instrument of choice from the Aboriginal cultures of Australia, Ed Drury seems to be at the forefront of bringing the instrument to the forefront of American culture! You only have to listen to his many collaborations with various musicians on his site to witness Ed smashing down the barriers of typical historical reference. Doing so will open your eyes and ears to a wonderful new, yet ancient, powerful dimension of sound that you just cannot get enough of!

A feature recently added to The JavaMusiK BloG has been to highlight an independent artist who we feel deserves our recommended attention.

This BloG issue's Indie Artist Pick is Scott Landers - Guitar-based Instrumentals from Destin, Florida

Scott Landers is an instrumental guitarist. His style of play is bluesy, aggressive 80's type instrumental metal/hard rock. He just so happens to do his playing sitting down due to being diagnosed as having muscular dystrophy in 1987. His talent and upbeat outlook on life, despite his hardships come from his faith in God.

Scott started playing guitar at 16. He stayed with one band during the 80's and 90's, Blue Collar - who played in and around Nashville, Tennessee. Now Scott is trying his hand at being a solo instrumentalist.

Scott Landers comes across as one of those all 'round good guys who you're just attracted to 'hang out' with. Lucky thing for all of us that the site he just happens to be the administrator for is called IndieHangout.com. His positive demeanor has attracted a diverse base of indie musicians who regularly come together at Scott's cyberhouse and hangout, discuss music and anything else that musicians will stray into. Imagine your favorite hangout during your college days where everyone would get together. That's Scott's cyberhouse "IndieHangout.com."

With Scott, it's about a whole lot more though. Scott has taken a seemingly insurmountable hurdle and turned it into a major track event with his guitar! Being diagnosed with muscular dystrophy nearly 20 years ago has only brought more focus to his musical efforts. Listening to his finely polished guitar acrobatics, one would never be aware of such an infliction as what Scott faces. If you like Joe Satriani or Steve Vai or any other of the guitar gods who strutted across the universe of 80's guitar rock, you've got to give Scott Landers a listen!

Glenn Thompson is working in a variety of forms to subvert existing paradigms and re work neural pathways. Described variously as "excellently strange" and "retro pop" he considers music the life blood of the soul and capable of the most enigmatic transformations.

His warm and supportive nature combined with his unique blend of music with it's wonderful sense of melancholy and an early 80's retro quality gives us at JavaMusiK a renewed enthusiasm for creativity. Evan Paul is a Canadian songwriter instrumentalist. After decades of playing live in various bands in Canada and the United States, Evan has settled into writing and recording. But he still does the odd live performance as solo, sometimes for free at the beach. Unlike the music of the past, which was mostly electric guitar and vocals, he has switched to classical contemporary, developing his own unique style of playing. The result is music that is easy listening, yet very uplifting and spiritual with overtones of many genres, but threaded with his own original sound.

We have found Evan Paul to be one of those rare souls who's music can capture your heart with the strum of the first chord. With accompaniments that may include the sound of the ocean or seagulls, his guitar-based melodies are guaranteed to lift your spirits upon first listen. Evan can often be found networking & collaborating with fellow musicians at Indie Hangout. We recommend giving a listen to Broken Wings (learning to fly with) and Ripples.

Michael James Moore is a California-based singer/songwriter instrumentalist. In today's music climate, it seems like you never truly get to know an Artist. Even more rare is an Artist that tells their life story without reservation. Enter Los Angeles, California born Michael Moore and you've found your man. Michael James Moore is a unique artist in that; he reaches out to a side that many of us are guilty of trying to control without the influence of God in our lives. Michael's debut album is merely the beginning of a relationship with an artist who reminds us that there is more to us than what we see in ourselves because there is a higher power that will provide, if we just let Him guide us.

We find it refreshing to discover an indie artist so willing to share his faith in his music. Michael James Moore has been a supportive and vibrant presence at the JustPlainFolks boards whom we have found to create music with an honesty on a personal level and very much worth a listen. Peter Romanowski is a bassist from Bedford, England. After playing in bands for some years in and around his home town Pete decided to write some of his own songs. In Europica you will find mostly reggae and a few other genres too.

We found Pete/Europica lingering on the boards at FunEnder.com. It wasn't long before we began to notice Europica's unique banner on many friend's playlists. So naturally, we checked out the music and found a uniquely appealing form of Reggae that cannot be heard just once. The groove quickly gets under your skin 8-) and you HAVE to hear it again! Another thing we noticed about Europica Pete is the genuine interest he takes in fellow indie musicians. His propensity to help others makes Peter Romanowski the person a very likeable fellow indeed!

Mike Milillo writes and experiments with the element of free Jazz, Classical(film music),Political Humor, Comedy, Instrumental Rock, Jazz Fusion, Hip Hop...Oh yea, there's some stellar education as well!
"Originally a sax player in a fusion band, I later studied Bebop and performed in that realm for a bit. I decided that I wanted to write my own ideas which are based on my everyday experiences. I simply love to organize notes and that in itself intrigues me. I consider myself more of a note organizer than simply a composer. I find that I may usually get bored with simple motifs or thematics, so I found that incessant modulations made me really find what I love to do. I like to keep myself on the edge as well as any potential listener..."

When considering who to feature in this particular BloG, Mike Millilo seemed like the obvious choice for the subject matter, once the BloG was written. While I do not know Mike that well, I have formed a few perceptions based on what I have heard and read from Mike over the last several months.

The first word which comes to mind regarding Mike is passion. Whether it be creating new music, listening to music or discussing things close to Mike, he enters the fray on a level which may not always be clear to the intended audience upon initial exposure. Mike's analytical depth presents a sometimes humorous, always intriguing, though often times challenging product for the intended party to discern.

While this may seem like a negative for the average person inflicted with such traits, quite the opposite is true when considering Mike. Discussions with Mike border on humorous and very thoughtful, yet you get the feeling that he is very committed to a highly elevated standard and belief structure. This concept becomes more apparent once you make the leap to venture into his aural playground.

Citing influences ranging from Frank Zappa to John Coltrane and Igor Stravinsky to John Cage with many stops in between, Mike's compositional stategies challenge the listener to make more than one pass at his offerings before a full awakening to what is happening can occur. However, with such a vast catalogue as Mike's, the listener has seemingly limitless choices of genres to choose from. One thing that can invariably be assured is, when listening to a Mike Milillo production, you are in for a genuine treat which will keep on giving with every consecutive listen.

While Mike's SoundClick page is vast, we recommend giving serious time and listens to his product. A good start would be Jazz Schmazz... featuring Tenor sax...Mike Milillo...Trumpet...Dennis Wieand... A beautiful ambient piece we would also recommend comes from Mike's collboration with Barry Durdant-Hollamby titled Beyond Time.

BloG #22's Indie Artist Pick is Damien Project - JDRF: Juvenile Diabetes....Music For a Cure

Damien Project: "We came in to existence for one ultimate goal. To bring awareness about, to teach people, and to help find a cure for Type 1 Diabetes, also known as Juvenile Diabetes, and in the process have had our music used in Film and Documentary works!"

Mark Skipper's daughter Tori, was diagnosed with Juvenile Diabetes when she was 18 months old. She has already lived with Diabetes for more than half her life and she is only 4 years old. She has already had 3960 injections of insulin and has had over 6600 finger pricks to check her blood sugar, just to keep her alive. When this happened, it became Marks mission to help raise awareness about this disease through his music.

The topic which was written about for this particular Blog was inspired solely and entirely by Mark Skipper, otherwise affectionately known among fellow musicians as Damien Project. This particular weekend, Mark is focusing all his energies to raising money and awareness for Juvenile Diabetes through an all-weekend telethon at IndieRadioLive.com. He has been tirelessly promoting, leading up to this fateful weekend and now it is here, which is why I am writing at 3 am. We here at JavaMusiK find that to be a highly admirable cause and salute Mark for such dedication! Officially, Damien Project consists of Mark, his daughter Tori, and collaborative musicians Rachel Pardieck, Lana J. Albert and Jill No Jack.

While I hardly know Mark, I have become familiar with several key factors concerning him. Mark would probably tell you that his most prominent passion is all things yogurt (such as how to correctly throw it), yet anyone who has dug deeper will immediately tell you he has a much more meaningful motive and resolve. The last 3 years have given Mark a new sole purpose in life through his daughter Tori. His quest for a cure for Tori's devastating illness all but consumes Mark in a tireless devotion through his music and efforts at raising awareness.

To write about Damien Project without mentioning the music would seemingly defeat our purpose, for this particular music holds up completely without the aid of such a worthy cause. While the cause is definitely the icing on Damien Project's yogurt flavored cake, the music featuring Mark's guitar prowess provides a skilled and appropriate sonic backdrop and soundtrack to accompany this cause.

The listener will find guitar-based instrumentals, punctuated by the occasional featured vocal track. There is just enough edge in the music to keep it intriguing, while maintaining a sonic sense of aural peace throughout. Mark's guitar gently weeps over Lana's rich orchestrations and Jill & Rachel's occasional vocals.

Their SoundClick page is full with a wide variety sure to please any listener. Do not hesitate to visit Damien Project where you can listen and learn more about JDRF! A good start would be 140 Queen St., a collab with Lana J. Albert dedicated to a house Mark lived in, destroyed by Hurricane Hugo, which he loved dearly. We also really like Rachel's Theme. While we understand voacals are coming and we look forward to hearing it with them, we feel it currently stands well without the vocals.

Well, I must say, this number certainly has it's anomolies.
Thankfully, I have found my way out of the cycle which used to haunt me, but for a time....

Friday the 13th:
I'm not going to go into details of the stories this date has befell me in the past. Dredging them up here wouldn't do anybody any good - especially me. However, there was about a 7 year period where I nearly got to the point where I didn't want to leave the house, just to make it through a Friday the 13th.

Interestingly, looking back at this period, there was not enough stories to warrant such a silly phobia. In fact, I can only think of 2 or 3 which all happened on the same Friday the 13th. Considering this all started nearly 25 years ago, my memory is no longer vivid enough to dwell there anymore. But in my own defense, those 2 or 3 incidents on the same day did spook this young buck pretty good.

That's about enough for this BloG. I wouldn't have brought it up at all, but since the number 13 only comes up once, I figured - what the heck??? Why not?

BloG #12: JavaMusiK Musical Influences - Breadcrumbs picked up along the way...

The JavaMusiK BloG #12 is going to take a detailed look into the musical influences of JavaMusiK. This may or may not give some background as to the development of the unique stylings behind the creations so far. This list is going to start with influences who have had somewhat of an impact, leading finally to the influences who have had a major impact on JavaMusiK.

The Beatles: Mostly an appreciation and respect for the group as a whole. JavaMusiK finds the story of The Beatles to be very intriguing and at times mystifying (Paul Is Dead clues, etc...). We find the creativity and propensity to grow as individuals, musicians and as a band to the point where their creativity led each member in different directions an intense part of the overall story of The Beatles.

The following is a JavaMusiK perspective on each band member, not based on literal fact, but only from personal observations from afar:

John Lennon - The painfully honest, raw unschooled talent. Always preferred to be a collaborator, whether with Paul, Yoko or any other musical icon who happened to wander into the studio during a session. The initial attraction for me as a listener to John's music in the early 70's was his combination of a beautiful melodic line, combined with lyrical content dealing on an intensely personal, sometimes painful subject matter all while seemingly dancing on the edge of a proverbial cliff. But more than that, was something about the production of John's vocals. If you listen closely, his vocals had a very faint echo in songs like Mind Games which, combined with the above listed elements, provided a very unique signature to his sound.

Paul McCartney - The left-handed antithesis to John, who could smooth over the rawness of John's innovative concepts propelling them into wonderful pop creations. Often accused of being the AOR member of the creative team, Paul had a gift for giving his musical creations a timeless quality through the steady musical form and solid construction. Beyond the musical contributions to the band, Paul provided the ultimate leadership in the band through his sometimes arrogant, usually balanced, always grounded leanings. Whether it was providing a framework for a string quartet accompaniment, or a fabrication based on the blues, or an uptempo ballad, Paul's handiwork never failed to deliver the goods through strong vocals, intense delivery and crafty orchestration.

George Harrison - Rightly or wrongly described as 'the quiet one' never getting his due in track representation on The Beatles' records, yet always providing the much needed subtle yet tasteful guitar handiwork over John's rhythm guitar, Paul's bass line & Ringo's beat. Some of the most timeless guitar lines have come from George's nimble fingerwork. It's no mistake that George had the first #1 hit following the breakup of The Beatles. 'If Not For You' and 'My Sweet Lord' are as refreshing to hear now as they were upon initial release. While the vast majority of the songwriting credit goes to Lennon/ McCartney, George's unique ability to provide fitting guitar work for each piece cannot be understated. When given the opportunity to offer up a track to The Beatles' records George sometimes would call upon his Eastern musical influences, such as in 'Norwegian Wood' or 'Within You, Without You' to provide a very different approach on some of his offerings. However, songs like 'Here Comes The Sun' and 'Something' put all the finer qualities that Harrison had to offer into classic creations that rank among The Beatles finer works.

Ringo Starr - The loveable teddy bear of a drummer who has provided music critics much to debate about over the years. From the camp calling Ringo the greatest rock drummer to the camp on other end of the spectrum describing Starr as a below average beat keeper, one thing is for certain. Ringo offered color to the band beyond his drumming prowess in not only his 'cute one' image, but also his quick wit combined with his fun artistry in songs he wrote such as 'Yellow Submarine,' 'Ob La Di, Ob La Da' and 'With A Little Help From My Friends.' Ringo provided the casual observer a lighter side to The Beatles' image which may have made the group more attractive to an even more diverse audience than they would've had w/out him.

Each member of The Beatles provided a set of essential elements that combined to make an appealing product which has proved to stand the test of time and afford subsequent contemporary bands a template to adhere to. This may prove to ultimately be the legacy underscoring their final legend.

Van Morrison: An Irish soul who sings & creates straight from the heart. His music has continued to get more beautiful through the years, gracefully taking on a more reflective theme as time pushes on. You would be hard pressed not find a more passionate white soulful singer.

Ludwig van Beethoven: Music with passion. Though not always drawn to music of the classics, I cannot help but be in awe as I listen to the masterpieces created by such a musical giant. Knowing the story behind this master musician makes the music so much more intriguing. I highly recommend 'Beethoven's Hair' as a read. It chronicles the tragic life of a great musician & discovers the cause and reason behind the many health issues, including deafness, which afflicted Beethoven.

Kate Bush: The first thing that strikes most listeners is her magnificent voice. Her keyboard wizardry combined with her dance/theatrics are not to be overlooked however. Kate Bush broke so much new ground during her prime in the early to mid eighties that it is not uncommon to hear many of today's female artists describe her as an influence. Her music always felt like a well choreographed three ringed circus - so much going on at once all in wondrous, yet sometimes disturbing/challenging harmony. It has been over a decade since her last release, but rumours are abounding of a new cd to be released in the near future. Count me among those who will be checking it out!

Peter Gabriel: Musical drama with a defined subtle imagery providing a spectacular theatrical backdrop to the sonic musical blessings Peter Gabriel has put forth. Music is offered up which often treads in deep waters often dwelling in subjects suggesting religious imagery, other times hinting a sexual undertone, yet always offering up a musical backdrop worthy of the masterful musicians Gabriel always employs. Often drawing upon African and Middle-Eastern influences, Gabriel's music has a mystical quality which can draw the listener into lyrical and musical depths not often experienced at once.

Pat Metheny/Lyle Mays: Jazz-based guitar mixed with piano which doesn't have that defined 'jazz' sound. It is more of an undefineable beautiful blend of hollow body guitar with piano. The solos often reach out beyond the form and speak to you with tenderness, building to a climactic crescendo just before dropping the listener off into another corner of their journey. Often drawing upon Brazilian influences, Metheny & Mays find ways to touch the sky during their musical interactions.

George Winston: Absolute precision. No varience, yet melodic lines which draw visions of angels and other heavenly hosts dancing through the aural landscape on the canvas of Winston's melodies. There is a brightness to his playing which feels like a door opening from a dark room cutting loose a great light for all the senses to feast on. However, the tones, while beautiful, often ring in a muted tone. Winston has discovered a signature sound which few can replicate, due to his technical prowess, combined with his unconventional experimentation into the audio realm of the instrument. Anyone who has seen and heard Winston live will notice a relaxed yet strict regimen in his performance. Winston is also a virtuoso on acoustic guitar, utilizing a slack-key technique.

Keith Jarrett: An improvisational piano genius. You can hear the ideas being formed as the music progresses. Amazing musical phrasing develops as the ideas flow into the river of complete musical seascapes. Intricate elements repeat with detailed precision, yet containing the slightest variation, building each time until the musical idea is complete eeking out a new corner within the vast journey Keith presents.

My music teachers: From my first elementary music teacher to my choir, band and orchestra directors to my private piano, voice & trombone instructors, each of these teachers have all imparted upon me a quality education that combined cannot be easily matched. Looking back, I did not always apply myself as much as I could've, but enough was picked up along the way to lead me here. I call that a good foundation.

Elton John: The first pop artist who captured the musical imagination of a childhood steeped in piano lessons and an introspective youth. With Bernie Taupin's lyrics brilliantly woven through finely crafted melodies accompanied by the songwriting talents of a piano playing singer, Elton John's music led this listener on a timeless colorful journey which has consistantly delivered the goods.

At a critical time in my musical formation, I had become disillusioned and quit taking piano lessons for awhile. Having become fascinated with the visual imagery combined with the melodic voicings of 'Goodbye Yellow Brick Road' followed by the subsequent release of the wildly fun sounds of 'Bennie & The Jets,' suddenly 'Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me' took to the airwaves. Upon hearing the opening introductory notes to this song, I suddenly became captivated by piano keys again. I had to learn how to play that song! That is the one driving factor that led me back to piano lessons again.

The previous story, followed by discovering that EJ wore spectacles too (like me) and made it a fun part of his image, followed by finally seeing his show live all combined to make this musical giant of a showman my biggest musical influence outside of my family.

My Mom & Dad: Time often gives one clarity and perspective that is not easily seen until the fog shrouding that reality has lifted. Upon looking back at my musical relationship with my mother & father, who were also my children's church choir director and Jr. High band director, I see a complicated, yet discerning education of my early training, all going back to my childhood with my parents. Beyond the technical training I obviously gained from their direction, I more importantly gained a discriminating ear for musical elements which, though sometimes seemingly misguided, usually lead to music of a more uplifting quality that I can only credit to the legacy paved by my parents' musical guidance imparted upon me.

Looking back, I feel lucky to have been given the opportunity to take piano lessons through my childhood - an opportunity not available to all children by any means. This opportunity eventually led to the piano becoming a true friend. I cannot lay claim to the technical prowess of the musical influences listed above, but I can lay claim to a love and passion for the instrument. This is a direct result of the lessons and guidance given to me by my parents during my childhood.
